Max Verstappen starts the season opener in Bahrain ahead of team-mate Sergio Perez from the front row.

The world champion in the past two years also starts the new season from pole position. Red Bull driver Max Verstappen (NED) was a tenth of a second faster than Mexican teammate Sergio Perez in qualifying in Bahrain. With a time of 1:29.708 minutes, the 25-year-old was much faster than in a test drive a week earlier at the same venue.

The Ferrari duo followed around Monegasque Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz of Spain in third and fourth. With fifth place on the grid, Fernando Alonso confirmed the strong impressions the Spaniard and his new Aston Martin team had left during testing and training sessions on the desert circuit had left in Sakhir.
