Parasport: Master and McCree swim to gold and bronze
At the conclusion of the European Paralympic Swimming Championships, which was held on the Portuguese island of Madeira, the Swiss team won two additional medals. In the 50-meter freestyle, Nora Meister from Aargau won her fourth and third gold medals. In a very exciting race, Meister arrived at exactly the same time as Nicole Turner from Ireland. “I think being able to share first place is absolutely fantastic,” the 21-year-old said. There was also some success for the men: in the 100m breaststroke, Leo McCrea swam to bronze with a new personal best time of 1:28.04 minutes. He lost 73 hundredths to Spaniard Anthony Ponce Bertrand's winning time.
The Window: The third bankruptcy of Schwaller / Schwaller
Swiss mixed footballers Breyer and Yannick Schwaller-Hörlemann suffered a third successive defeat at the World Championships in Östersund, Sweden, missing out on a direct place in the semi-finals. The duo was forced to admit defeat to Japan 7:8, leaving the group victory to Norway (9:3 over Spain). In the quarter-finals, the opponent is Scotland. The Swiss had already qualified for the qualifiers (as of Friday) the previous Wednesday.
Sailing: Lengwiler and Sandera earned Olympic quota spots
Elena Lingweiler and Elena Sandera secured two places for Switzerland at the Paris Olympics at the Last Chance Regatta in Hyères, France. The St. Gallen kitesurfer Lengwiler in Formula Kite racing. Switzerland earned an additional place in the iQ Foil Women category due to unclaimed qualifications. As a so-called “developing nation” – that is, a country that was not represented in this category in the last two matches – Sandira from Zurich was able to achieve this success with a 22nd place.
