This company is the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases

The oil company Saudi Aramco emitted 2.7 billion tons of carbon dioxide last year. This makes it by far the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases.

No single company emits more carbon dioxide than Saudi Aramco, the oil company owned by Saudi Arabia. The world's largest oil producer produces 2.7 tons of carbon dioxide. This was shown through an analysis conducted by the American financial services company MSCI.

If Saudi Aramco were a country, it would share third place with India on the list of countries emitting the most carbon dioxide. Only China (11.5 billion tons) and the United States of America (5 billion tons) They emit more every year.

The second largest emitter of greenhouse gases is Coal India, the world's largest coal producer. It causes the emission of 1.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide every year. The third place went to the American oil company Exxon Mobil, with a production of 941 million tons of carbon dioxide.

Porsche and Volkswagen are in the top 20

The figures refer to the period between September 2022 and August 2023 and take into account CO2 emissions from the entire value chain (Scope 1, 2 and 3), from raw material extraction to the final consumer. However, some emissions were underestimated by MSCI because not all companies publish their CO2 data transparently.

The top twenty CO2 emitters listed are companies operating almost exclusively in the energy and mining sectors. The exceptions are the three automobile companies SAIC (626 million tons), Porsche (512 million tons) and Volkswagen (493 million tons).
