Medvedev wrestling the Hurkachez
Daniil Medvedev (ATP 2) reached the last four of the ATP 1000 Championships in Toronto. The top-seeded Russian prevailed on Friday in just under two and a half hours with 2:6, 7:6 (8:6), 7:6 (7:5) against pole position Hubert Hurkacz. In the semifinals, the 25-year-old meets John Isner. The American beat Gael Monfils (FRA/22) 7:6 (7:5), 6:4. The Frenchman was allowed to condemn himself to the hit of the day.
In the second semi-final, Stefanos Tsitsipas (GRE), the new world number 3, will compete with Riley Opelka (ATP 32).
Giorgi surprises in Montreal
Italy’s Camila Giorgia unexpectedly qualified for the semi-finals of the parallel WTA 1000 Championships in Montreal. World No. 71 eliminated American Cory Gauff (WTA 24) in the quarter-finals. Giorgi now meets Jessica Pegula (USA/30), who had the upper hand over Tunisian Anas Jabeur (WTA 22). Second place in the final is top seed Arina Sabalenka (BLR/3) and Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova (CZ/6).
Bencic in Cincinnati vs. Vondrosova
Belinda Bencic (WTA 11) kicks off her first post-Olympic tournament next week against her latest opponent from Tokyo. He will face Czech gold and silver medalist Marketa Vondrosova (WTA 42) in the first round of the WTA 1000 Championships in Cincinnati. In addition to Bencic, Jil Teichmann (WTA 65) is right in the main field. The left-hander receives a wildcard and starts against Romanian Sorana Cerestia (WTA 40).
