Bitter World Cup ending for Australia: Sweden win third-place match
Sweden can celebrate their third place in the World Cup.

The ongoing World Cup on home soil ended in further disappointment for Australian footballers. Superstar Sam Kerr’s side lost 0-2 (0-1) in the third-place match against Sweden. Barcelona professional Fridolina Rolfo scored a penalty kick to make it 1-0 after half an hour in front of nearly 50,000 spectators in Brisbane. In the 62nd minute, captain Kosovare Aslani gave Sweden a 2-0 lead.

The Australians had earlier lost their chance in the final against England (1-3). Captain Kerr unfortunately had to be treated after 75 minutes. Your coach Toni Gustavsson eventually lost to his own country. For Australia, fourth place was their best result in their eighth World Cup participation. The co-host sparked great jubilation in the country at the tournament, but the players were denied medals.

The Swedish team finished second at the World Cup in 2003 and achieved their best ever result by finishing third for the fourth time after 1991, 2011 and 2019. The final between European champions England and Spain is this Sunday (12pm CEST/ZDF) in Sydney.

Sweden celebrates with two Bundesliga specialists
In a different game, according to video evidence, Clare Hunt was awarded a penalty kick when she brought down Sweden’s Stina Blakstenius – and former Munich and Wolfsburg player Rolpo scored from the spot into the right corner. Aslani’s goal in the bottom right made it 2-0. She launched the attack herself. Matildas are often harmless to crime.
Both Bundesliga players eventually celebrated for the Swedes: Bayern newcomer Magdalena Eriksen impressed in central defence. Rebecka Blomqvist from VfL Wolfsburg arrived a good hour later.
