In the electric age, everyone talks about range – and what does the new Peugeot 308 SW diesel-engined compact station wagon do? The 997 km range is shown on the screen when we enter. One often forgets that although electricity is undoubtedly the future, 55 percent of our new cars are still “normal” combustion engines without electricity.
The new 308, optionally available with a hatchback, is unfortunately not available with all-wheel drive, but also as a hybrid (180 or 225 hp), a petrol engine (130 hp) – and a 2023 electric e-308. But we are testing a 130 hp (96 kW) diesel engine and automatic in the GT-Pack.
This is new in 308 SW
The new 308 is visually expressive. We think it looks great! But experience teaches us that tomorrow’s fashion is quickly becoming obsolete – let’s wait and see if it is, say, fashion that is technically closely related, or fashion that is highly divergent. Opel Astra Sports Tourer Style lasts longer with a timeless design. But currently the 308 is definitely eye-catching.
Gadgets with a 3D effect are a gimmick that the neighbor does not yet have – envious details, so to speak. Plus, the typical Peugeot cockpit (one looks at the instruments rather than the steering wheel) makes the head-up display unnecessary. In the front you sit impressively and almost sporty thanks to the small steering wheel, and the armchairs are very lush and comfortable.

The width of the hand remains on the head and knees at the back: not prominent, but as comfortable as usual in this class. When it comes to cargo space, the cream-first design spoils the party mood: At 4.64m, the SW is 27cm longer than the 308, but payload size isn’t much of a fanfare. However, it should be said: the details are well thought out and there is always enough for children, skittles and the like.
We love it so much
Grande Autonation created one of the best operating innovations of the year: under the infotainment system is a toggle bar with large buttons. It’s not just a touch screen – its “buttons” can be customized freely! Since you can also freely design the home display of your infotainment system, you end up with the user interface you want – yes, This is how screens make you suddenly feel happy (over here even more ingenious details).
If you change the colors of the ambient light and instrumentation, the display “buttons” also change color: not important, but beautiful – usually Mercedes & Co. comes up with something like this. As a treat, there’s the good old unbeatable practical volume knob. Meanwhile, same day Volkswagen Golf Variant It has cost-saving hard plastic and open plastic compartments, saves 308 noble materials and curtains on the shelves.
We like it less
We used to sigh a lot about bullshit in French cars. This doesn’t happen on the 308 – until we want to enter navigation destinations and radio stations via voice control. Nothing works in German, after 15 minutes we give up and enter manually. At least the system is better in French. It is also unfortunate that the radio reception is very poor.
This is how the 308 SW drives
On the way, we marvel at how well the Stellantis Group has differentiated the brands in terms of driving experience. subordinate Opel Astra About is German driving and remarkably energetic, the highly polished French 308 is polished on a smooth wave. Not that he can’t turn or swing, steering is fun – especially in “sport”. But comfort is of the essence.
In “sports” diesel is a good mood. And it raises its voice sulky, but the 308 always remains quiet. In the “Eco”, the diesel stumbles due to weak starting points, but the machine turns out well. Not a rocket – but personally faster than on paper (0-100 km/h and 10.9 seconds). In everyday life is great! Also higher: consumption tested 5.1 l / 100 km, with a comfortable ride under five liters.
opinion conclusion
We’re amazed at how mature and high-quality it feels and the 308’s engine – you don’t need a mid-range station wagon anymore. Very beautiful yet still functional, the 308 SW is the right choice for those who value comfort more than the snippets of curves. He can’t speak German very well, but everything else.
Diesel 130 hp with automatic transmission is available from 37,000 francs. Our test 308 is almost fully equipped and costs CHF47,550 with options (like leather and glass roof) – sounds like a lot, but it’s fair by comparison.
