Ralf Rangnick made the start of his dream as the new head of the Austrian national team. The former Manchester United boss coached Osies on his debut to score an unforgettable 3-0 win at the start of the Nations League against second-place runners-up Croatia.
Captain Marko Arnautovic (41st), Michael Grigorić (54th) and Marcel Sabitzer (57th) scored the goals for Austria, who failed under Rangnick’s predecessor Franco Voda in the World Cup qualifiers in March.
After the initial troubles, the guests in Osijek played very effectively and took their chances in the icy cold. This is the first victory over the Croats, who suffered their first defeat since the knockout round at last year’s European Championship – after nine matches.
Modric is tall on the bench
Champions League champion David Alaba from Real Madrid missed Rangnick, and the former Munich player did not travel at all due to stress.
Rangnick’s high pressure was initially unsuccessful. The Croatians found playful solutions, and dominated the game even without their star Luka Modric, who sat on the bench for an hour, and created more clear chances to score.
The Austrians were stronger at the end of the first half, but the lead through Arnautovic’s 33rd international goal came as a surprise. Rangnick brought in Christopher Tremmel and Gregoric in the second half, to boost the lead 2-0 after a great combination. Sabitzer pursued a long-range shot. (AFP/MAM)
