Fully charge an electric car in 6 minutes? Nyobolt makes that possible

Charging time is one of the main obstacles to widespread penetration of electric vehicles. Now a collaboration between design firm Callum and battery manufacturer Nyobolt claims to have come up with a groundbreaking solution: They’re offering an electric car whose battery can be fully charged in just six minutes.

Lotus Elise with charging lightning

Technical innovation is demonstrated using the example of a modified Lotus Elise. This car was the basis for the first Tesla Roadster and comes with a new look: wider hips, carbon fiber bodywork, modern LED lights, and 19-inch alloy wheels. At the same time, the car remains lightweight with a curb weight of just over one ton.

However, the main innovation is Nyobolt’s charging technology. The Cambridge-based company has taken a systems approach in which every aspect, from materials to cells to the entire vehicle, has been optimized to enable fast charging time. The battery pack capacity of 35 kWh is enough for a trip of up to 250 kilometres. The crucial factor here is that, according to Newbolt, frequent fast charging does not cause a significant loss in battery performance. In 2000 shipping cycles to date, no burglaries have been detected.

Design meets innovation

The project is also a reunion of old acquaintances: former Jaguar design chief Ian Callum and former colleague Julian Thompson developed the Nyobolt EV design together. They rely on a mix of classic elements and modern touches to inspire even die-hard car enthusiasts to switch to electric mobility.

Nyobolt plans to bring the new battery technology into series production starting in 2024. It is still unclear whether the model based on the Elise will actually go on sale. But the two companies talk about more collaboration and seem to want to help shape the future of electric mobility.
