Bernese even fish out free coffee tickets from the trash

If you have to wait longer at the SBB office at Bern train station, you will receive a drink voucher with each queue ticket. This can be redeemed at any K-Kiosk branch – eg for a Starbucks coffee or cold drink.

“The pilot project has been in operation since mid-March and is being tested at individual stations,” writes SBB on request. The company did not disclose the exact stations for fear of mistreatment. You see the coupon as compensation for the long waiting time.

Customers gratefully accept the offer. And sometimes bold.

“The first time I was very happy to be allowed to drink a warm cup of coffee during the long wait,” says Nau.ch reader Bruno M. (32)*. Bruno’s request: “A large cappuccino with vanilla syrup.”

A few days later, Bruno—who was traveling with a friend—was creative: “I was short on money. So I just pulled a used parking card out of the trash.”

His companion also got to enjoy a free drink. My friend had a latte.

When asked by Nau.ch, the SBB didn’t know anything about the abuse of waiting list tickets. But she points out: “The offer is not always valid.” Waitlist tickets with coupon will only be issued after a certain waiting period.

How effectively the offer was used is not clear. Valora K-Kiosk worker wrote: “SBB gives away vouchers for Valora outlets on other occasions.”

It is therefore not possible to determine which vouchers have been issued and redeemed by SBB and for what reason.

It remains to be seen if the pilot project with waiting time slips will prove successful.
