Belgium knock out defending champions Australia from World Cup of Darts after thriller

Belgium advanced to the semi-finals of the World Cup of Darts after defeating defending champions Australia. In Sunday evening’s semi-final, top seed Wales will meet.

Dimitri van den Berg and Kim Huybrechts already had a thriller to offer in this national competition. The Dutch pair of Danny Noppert and Dirk van Duijvenpoet lost 8-7 to the Belgians on Saturday evening.

Belgium got off to a great start in the game. Finishing 107, a 16-darter, a 13-darter and a 14-darter, the two Flemings quickly took a 4-1 lead. Australia rebounded to 4-4 thanks to a 12-darter and 64 finish.

But then Belgium took a 7-5 lead as Australia missed five chances to tie the game at 6-6 in the 12th leg. But with an 80 checkout and a 12-darter, the two defending champions battled back to 7-7.

Australia started the last leg well, but two 140s saw Belgium come back well. Van den Berg could have decided the game from 45 but missed two match darts. Hedda had a chance to score 120 to lead Australia to victory, but his dart missed at the tops. Then it was Huybrechts who made the Belgian happy.
