And thanks also to Emirates Airlines: Lufthansa Technik expands the Airbus A380

As recently as the summer of 2021, Lufthansa denied that the Airbus A380 had any chance of returning to the fleet. Today it is clear that the German airline will again use at least six giant planes. And so for several years. One is currently undergoing major maintenance at Lufthansa Technik in Manila in the Philippines, and a second will follow shortly.

This is exactly where the group’s technology company is now expanding. “At Lufthansa Technik Philippines, preparations are underway for a third overhaul line for the Airbus A380, with which the company is responding to the recent strong increase in demand for MRO services for an aircraft type that has now been reinvigorated by many airlines,” Lufthansa Technik said. MRO stands for Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul.

The repair line is scheduled to start operations in the second half of 2023. The customer there will not only be the German airline. Because Lufthansa Technik also takes care of the giant planes of British Airways and has just acquired Emirates Airlines as a new customer.

Lufthansa Technik President Sören Stark explained that there has also been a change in customers. No names mentioned. “We will see if it is possible to increase production capacity further in the Philippines,” Stark promised. Talk about “three lines and in perspective maybe more than that”.
