The airline established Japan’s first cargo airline in 1978 with Cargo Corporation. In 2005 it came out again. Now All Nippon Airways is buying back Nippon Cargo Airlines.
In Japan, too, the need for air cargo capacity increased rapidly in the 1950s. But a pure cargo airline was still missing in the country. And so, in 1959, Japan Airlines and three shipping companies set out to change that.
But they considered the danger to be great. There were also legal hurdles due to the incoming country having only one international airline. Thus the plan was again dropped.
All Nippon Lines have adopted this idea
In 1972, two shipping companies and All Nippon Airways ANA took up this idea. They set out to found their own Japanese cargo airline. But now Japan Airlines has tried to put obstacles in the path of the new airline. So Nippon Cargo Airlines was not founded until 1978.
Meanwhile, other partners joined the project. However, it took another eight years before the first flight. On May 8, 1986, a Nippon Cargo Airlines plane with computers, electronics, machinery and textiles on board took off for the first time from Tokyo Narita towards the USA.
The process has become more difficult
In 2005, All Nippon Airways went out of business again. The airline sold its shares in Nippon Cargo Airlines (or NCA for short) to shipping company Nippon Yusen, better known as NYK Line. Today, together with ANA Cargo, it operates its freight company with a fleet of nine Boeing 767Fs and two Boeing 777Fs.
But Nippon Cargo Airlines now belongs to the founder. Nippon Yusen, the sole owner since 2010, has decided to sell the cargo airline to All Nippon Airways. She explained that the fleet, maintenance and operation require a great effort. “In the highly volatile business environment of air freight transportation, NCA has faced challenges in expanding its business,” the freight company said in a statement.
Nippon Cargo operates eight Boeing 747-8F aircraft
All Nippon Airways said the acquisition means “a significant expansion of the international air cargo network” and products and services. Nippon Cargo Airlines has a fleet of eight Boeing 747-8F aircraft.
