AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE can now be overclocked even higher

So far it has not been possible to overclock the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE as much as many would have liked due to AMD's limitations. However, this is now possible thanks to a new driver update.

Thanks to the new Adrenalin 24.3.1 update, it is now possible to overclock your AMD GPU even further. Although nothing was mentioned in AMD's patches, it was vaguely listed in the changelogs with “Maximum memory tuning may be displayed incorrectly on AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics products,” but Techpowerup, which also posts GPU-Z, after the first tests found that the card can now be overclocked more. This now allows the Radeon RX 7900 GRE to run at much higher clock speeds by manually adjusting the overclocking controller via AMD software.

The RX 7900 GRE was previously released as a special edition, but only in China. With this introduction, AMD intends to carefully position itself compared to various other GPU products so as not to interfere in their markets. It did suffer from overclocking limitations, which could be on par with or more clearly outperform other products.

TechPowerUP immediately experienced what performance looks like with the PowerColor RX 7900 GRE Hellhound graphics card. It is now possible to overclock the memory up to 2604 MHz. Before that, it was only possible to achieve an operating speed of up to 2316 MHz. This is a 15% performance increase.

However, you should be aware that the memory can only be overclocked up to 24 GB/s, as GDDR6 chipsets are still limited in their performance. Overclocking the memory increases the Time Spy GT1's frame rate from 72.6 fps to 77.1 fps in 3DMark tests, according to TechPowerUP. This also corresponds to an increase of 15%. In terms of graphics, the newly overclocked GPU outperformed the RTX 3090 Ti.

However, AMD may have changed its strategy regarding the card and is allowing users to overclock their graphics card further. This may be attractive for some people to purchase the card.
