Zurich (awp) – ABB has secured a new order worth $150 million from the Australian state of Queensland. The Swiss company announced on Friday that it will provide complete traction packages, engineering and services for 65 six-car passenger trains.
These trains will be delivered under the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) in Australia. As part of this plan, the Queensland Government commissioned Australian infrastructure service provider Downer ETI Rail to deliver a total of 65 six-car passenger trains by the time Brisbane hosts the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032. They will then operate across the entire South East Queensland rail network.
This type of train consists of several cars, each equipped with its own electric drive. ABB has received an order to supply train drives from Hyundai Rotom (Korea), a joint venture company of Downer ETI Rail.
As part of the order, ABB is now building a new factory in Maryborough, Queensland, to manufacture the drive packages locally. According to the announcement, the company is investing $6 million. The so-called new competence center for the assembly and servicing of traction converters, motors and batteries is said to ensure “more effective support for ABB customers in Australia and New Zealand”.
