It’s the next level of escalation in the row between billionaires Jeff Bezos (57) and Elon Musk (50). Amazon Bezos founder Blue Origin is suing the US government for a $1 billion contract with rival SpaceX from Tesla founder Elon Musk, according to several media reports.
As Blue Origin announced Monday, the lawsuit is making “mistakes” in the procedures for awarding NASA’s new lunar module. The company awarded the $2.9 billion (CHF2.65 billion) contract to SpaceX in April.
“restoring justice”
Blue Origin protested NASA’s decision immediately after it was awarded to SpaceX. Among other things, Bezos’ company filed a complaint with the US Audit Office. NASA has reported the case and is examining the case.
Blue Origin: “We firmly believe that problems in the procurement process and its outcome need to be resolved in order to restore justice, ensure competition, and ensure a safe return to the moon for America.”
Bezos wants the job no matter the cost
Amazon founder Bezos has repeatedly expressed his displeasure with the lost order. The businessman even offered money to NASA. If the company is allowed to compete with SpaceX again, Blue Origin will incur, among other things, up to $2 billion in costs to develop and manufacture the lunar lander.
The mission, scheduled for 2024 at the earliest, is expected to put four astronauts into lunar orbit. To get closer to the moon, two of them will fly to the SpaceX lunar module. (gif)
