Derby City No. 111 FC St. Pauli has yet to make a decision regarding promotion. HSV can continue to hope after a 1-0 win at a sold-out Volkspark.
Hamburg SV have denied city rivals FC St. Pauli early promotion to the Bundesliga. In the 111th derby, the home team won 1-0 (0-0) on Friday evening in front of 56,100 spectators at a sold-out Volkspark. Robert Glatzel scored the winning goal with a header in the 85th minute.
Since third-placed Fortuna Düsseldorf scored a 3-1 winner against FC Nuremberg, the Kickers will have to hope for their next opportunity on May 12 against relegation-threatened VfL Osnabrück. With two days to go, HSV still have a chance of reaching the relegation zone with four points and 13 goals behind Düsseldorf.
Two HSV results are not counted
After the two teams faced off during the warm-up (more on that below), Emanuel Viray opened the game with HSV's first chance (8th place). Nikola Vasilj blocked the long-range shot. When Glatzel scored the supposed 1-0 goal in the 24th minute, the crowd at the Volkspark cheered. However, referee Matthias Golenbeck saw a foul by the HSV striker and refused to acknowledge the goal. Johannes Eggestein executed the visitors' most dangerous moves, but his header went wide of the goal (41).
In the second section, the game faltered at the beginning. In the 62nd minute, Golenbeck got another goal back for HSV. After watching the video images, Vasilj was penalized for a foul by Lukas Poreba. The St. Pauli goalkeeper was responsible for the goal when he came too late to save Glatzel's header from a Miro Moheim corner kick.
In stoppage time, Saliakas made a save from substitute Masaya Okugawa. Jöllenbeck tried the video images again and decided on the penalty, yellow and red for the previously nervous Greek. But Ludovit Reis failed because of Vasilj.
Forming the pack before the start of the match
Half an hour before kick-off of the 111th Hamburg City derby between HSV and FC St. Pauli, a group formed during warm-ups on the pitch at the Volkspark. Representatives and officials from both teams attacked each other verbally and physically on Friday evening.
A FC St. Pauli player allegedly entered HSV's half of the field during the match and collided with an opposing player. Players on both sides struggled to break up the arguments.
