“Next stop in Switzerland,” wrote Lindsey Vonn on Instagram. However, the former ski star does not want to take a vacation in our country. The 37-year-old has a mission to fulfill, as she revealed on her Instagram story the view from an airplane window.
What is this task? Vaughn wants to bring the Winter Olympics back to Salt Lake City. To the place where she made her Olympic debut at the age of 17 in 2002 (6th place in combined group, 32nd place in slalom). “I am excited to help the United States’ bid to bring the 2030 Olympics back to Salt Lake City.”
She will now meet people from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne over the next few days – along with Fraser Bullock, CEO of the Bidding Committee. “Wish us well,” Vaughn asks her followers.
Tough competition for Salt Lake City
It’s not just her first Olympic participation that tied her to Salt Lake City. The four-time World Cup winner, who has won 82 World Cup races, Olympic gold (downhill 2010) and two World Championships (Super-G and downhill 2009) in her career, lives close to Park City.
However, competition for the city in the US state of Utah is fierce. Because Barcelona (Spain) with the Pyrenees, Albertville, Vancouver (CA) and Sapporo (Japan) also want to host the 2030 Games.
Sapporo has to be my favourite. However, the Japanese have not yet forgotten about the “epidemic games” in Tokyo 2021, which caused a lot of expenses. This is why you may never want to be a host again.
However, it won’t be easy in Salt Lake City. Because two years ago, the 2028 Summer Games would be held in Los Angeles. Could Vonn’s bonus convince the IOC to award back-to-back matches to the US? The decision on the venue for 2030 is expected to be announced at the IOC meeting in May 2023. (Bear)
