London This Wednesday, Great Britain celebrated the 75th birthday of its national health system, the National Health Services (NHS), with a ceremony at Westminster Abbey. However, most doctors and nurses do not like to celebrate.
A week after the anniversary, almost 48,000 junior doctors in England plan to stop work for five days. It will be the longest strike in the history of the NHS and is another highlight in industrial action by doctors, nurses and paramedics for better pay.
According to the NHS, more than 650,000 surgeries and doctors’ appointments have been canceled since the strikes began last December. More than 7.4 million Britons are waiting for treatment in completely overburdened hospitals. In addition, on July 20 and 21, chief doctors and other doctors in leading positions want to stop work for 48 hours “initially”.
