The number of vasectomies has skyrocketed since the summer of 2022 in the United States, when the nationwide right to abortion was repealed and state legislatures can regulate whether abortions are allowed by law. “The Economist” estimates a 17 percent increase in the second half of 2022 from health data.
Between 2017 and 2021, The Economist writes that surgeries increased by an average of four percent each year, and estimates that between July and December 2022, around 20,000 additional men decided to undergo it. The increase was seen in the 46 states where abortion is strictly regulated, including Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas and Utah, where the increase was more than 40 percent each.
The average age of patients also declined slightly but steadily across the country in the second half of 2022. According to the survey, some fear that without access to abortion, they will have no real protection if their primary method of birth control fails. According to The Economist, others who have been considering the practice for some time appear to have been motivated by concerns that vasectomy might be banned next. A final group of men considered the surgery in common with women.
