Should Kenan Karaman have received a red card in the 82nd minute against Fortuna Düsseldorf? A somewhat unknown rule that delighted the Schalke striker.

Gelsenkirchen – The big upset in the match between FC Schalke 04 and Fortuna Düsseldorf (1:1) occurred in stoppage time when referee Harm Osmers canceled out the penalty kick awarded to S04 after a VAR check. Another scene also caused astonishment in the Veltins Arena.

Schalke 04 is lucky in the rules: Why didn't Karaman leave the field against Düsseldorf?

In the 82nd minute, Kenan Karaman knocked his opponent off his feet with a counterattack. The FC Schalke 04 professional player has already been booked at this stage. Referee Harm Osmers allowed Fortuna Düsseldorf's lead to continue after the tactical foul – thus saving the S04 striker from being sent off.

Because the rule says: If the referee allows the advantage to be triggered in the event of a tactical foul, the violator will no longer be warned. Kenan Karaman was not initially aware of the rule that has been in effect since the beginning of the 2020/21 season. “I think I'm really lucky because I'm a decisive player in preventing the counter-attack,” the 30-year-old also told RUHR24 in the mixed zone.

Schalke pro Ron Schallenberg knows the rule after being fired in 2020

But a few minutes earlier, Ron Schallenberg had already informed the reporters present about the base. “If Ron said that, it would be true. He's good at this kind of stuff,” Keenan Karaman said afterward.

But the midfielder's knowledge of the rules had a serious background. Ron Schallenberg saw yellow and red in a similar scene on 19 December 2020 while wearing a Paderborn jersey against VfL Osnabrück. Because: If the foul is so severe that a yellow or red card must be shown, the referee must still intervene. But this was not the case with Kenan Karaman.

Kenan Karaman, Schalke's top scorer (eleven goals and nine assists) was still on the field and could have scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-1 shortly before the end of the match, having already made it 1-0. Referee Harm Osmers decided differently after a VAR check.

Schalke striker Kenan Karaman on staying in the league: “We will not allow that to be taken from us anymore”

In the end, Schalke 04 secured an important point and are now six points clear of the first relegation zone with three games to go. With their win on Saturday (May 4, 1pm) over last-placed VfL Osnabrück, the Royal Blues can pretty much make it all clear.

Keenan Karaman is certain: “This matter is in our hands, and we will not allow it to be taken away from us.”
