Michael Jordan is considered one of the best basketball players in the world – and he continues to set records even after the end of his active sports career: this time with shoes. A pair of his sneakers sold for $2.2 million in New York. That’s the equivalent of about two million euros — and according to auction house Sotheby’s, no pair of shoes has ever sold for more money. Jordan wore the shoe during the 1998 NBA Finals game.
In October 2021, Sotheby’s actually auctioned off a pair of Michael Jordan sneakers. At the time it was worn by the former pro in his first season in the NBA. About $1.5 million was paid at that time. A pair of Kanye West’s sneakers at the 2008 Grammys fetched more money: $1.8 million.
This new shoe record takes place at a time when Michael Jordan’s career – and his shoes – are already receiving new attention: In “Air – The Big Throw,” Ben Affleck tells the story of the legendary advertising deal between Michael Jordan and Nike that changed the world of sports forever.
