Brampton (dpa) – German women’s ice hockey has surprisingly reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Canada. On Tuesday, national coach Thomas Schadler’s side won 2:1 (2:0, 0:1, 0:0) over Hungary in the final of the preliminary round, and will now meet big favorites USA on Thursday (7.30 p.m. / MagentaSport ).

With Brampton’s goals, Ronja Hark (11 min) and Nikola Eisenschmidt (20) secured victory in the third qualifying round in Match Four. Hungary succeeded only through Reka Dabasi (21st) shortly after the start of the middle section. Otherwise, the German defense was secure with good goalkeeper Sandra Upstreetre.

Germany previously beat Sweden (6-2) and France (3-0) and lost only to Finland (0-3). Staying in the league is almost more important than reaching the quarter-finals, with Germany playing a stark outsider on Thursday – the stated goal of the World Cup. There were previously doubts about structural problems in German women’s ice hockey.
