The first Swiss Boeing 777 flew to the United States with special shark chips.
Is this a trip to a new era of flying? On Friday, at 1.39 pm, the Swiss flew to Miami on a Boeing 777. As the world’s first passenger plane with the new Aero Shark technology.
A transparent film attached to the fuselage and engines mimics the aerodynamic properties of shark skin. Thus, it reduces fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions during the flight. The Federal Government supports the project through special funding for environmental projects.
Fully Equipped Fleet
“Using Aero-Shark is an example of how aviation can be made more sustainable using innovative technology,” says Dieter Franks (50), CEO of Swiss. “Our fleet is already one of the most modern and CO2 efficient aircraft in Europe. Thanks to Aero-Shark, we can further improve this balance.”
Shark skin is a film jointly developed by Lufthansa Technik and the chemical company BASF, which has small ribs and thus reduces frictional resistance during flight. In the next few months, all 12 aircraft in the Swiss Boeing 777 fleet will be fitted with the film. (pbe)
