Boost from the Netflix series “The Crown”
Corkis: The Queen’s favorite dog breed is on the rise again in Great Britain
London. With the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s throne (96), interest in the Queen’s favorite dog breed is growing again in the United Kingdom: Pembroke Welsh Gorky. By 2021, 1,223 puppies have been registered nationwide, in nearly 30 years, according to the umbrella organization of the British Dog Breeders Association, The Kennel Club (DKC). Known for her love of the Welsh Sheepdog, Queen has been raising Korkis for decades.

The kennel club has blamed the most recent increase on the Netflix series “The Crown”. The series about the life of the king brought the race back to public consciousness. TKC Spokesman Bill Lambert expressed his delight at the return of Welsh Corkis to “fame in such an important year for the Queen”. The “crown” series has provided a boost in recent years. “But the Queen first played a key role in promoting Corkis to the public. What a wonderful testament to her 70th year on the throne, to being able to see her beloved race re-emerge,” Lambert said.
Puppy Susan started a dynasty
Corkis gained prominence in 1944 when then-Princess Elizabeth received a puppy hint for her 18th birthday, which marked the discovery of a royal Gorky dynasty. By 1960, the number of cubs had risen to about 9,000. This was also due to the spread of television, which made members of the royal family and their animals more familiar.

But then the interest waned greatly – in 2014 only 274 puppies were registered. Among other things, experts accuse professional breeders of rarely being there and hobby breeders focusing on simple breeds. With the start of the “crown” in 2018, the number of Gorky puppies has increased again.
