For Paris Saint-Germain, the most important goal of the season will be on the line on Wednesday. Only winning in Dortmund is equivalent to staying safe in the Champions League. By obtaining three points against Borussia Dortmund, who have already qualified for the round of 16, coach Luis Enrique’s team is still able to secure first place in the sixth hammer group.
But even a draw with the fifth-placed team in the Bundesliga could mean PSG missing out on the Champions League knockout stages for the first time since 2011. That is if Newcastle United win at home to AC Milan in their second group match. If the match at St James’ Park ends in a draw, the French champions can afford defeat.
Tame Paris Saint-Germain away from home
PSG’s away record in the top flight is not good at all. In Newcastle they lost 1:4, and in Milan they lost 1:2. This series is now supposed to end in front of the “Yellow Wall” in the Dortmund Arena.
Finishing third in the group and going to the Europa League would come as a shock to the stellar squad from the Seine. Even if the club wants to rely on him long-term, Luis Enrique’s loan may have already been exhausted. The question about the future of Kylian Mbappé, who will be able to sign with a new club from January with his contract expiring, will likely become relevant again.
Donnarumma’s weakness?
Paris Saint-Germain fans are also concerned about the current form of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who made several mistakes in the last few matches and was sent off at Le Havre (2-0) after a strange entry.
However, others can provide stability: captain Marquinhos and midfielder Warren Zaire Emery should return from injury.
