Tennis star Rafael Nadal, 35, has returned from a month-long hiatus with injury by winning the tournament while at the Australian Open. The 20-time Grand Slam champion of Spain won the Preliminary Tournament Final in Melbourne against Maxime Cressi (US) 7:6 (8:6), 6:3 and is celebrating the 89th title of his professional career. This is while his Serbian rival Novak Djokovic was stuck in a quarantine hotel in Melbourne and hoping to enter the country.
Nadal interrupted the previous season with a foot injury in August ahead of the US Open. After the invitation tournament in Abu Dhabi in December, he tested positive for Covid-19. The Australian Open, which begins on January 17 in Melbourne, has won Nadal only once (2009).
Nadal is looking for the top three
In the history of professional tennis (since 1968) only Jimmy Connors (109), Roger Federer (103) and Ivan Lendl (94) have won more titles than Nadal. Follows long-time rival Novak Djokovic’s 86 championship victories. Alexander Zverev, for example, has already won 19 championships at the age of 24 – six of them last year.
In Adelaide, Frenchman Gael Monfils took the eleventh title of his career. The 35-year-old defeated Tokyo silver medalist Karen Khachanov (Russia), 6:4, 6:4 in the final. Monfils was ranked number one in Adelaide and, like Nadal, did not drop a set during the tournament. (AFP)
