A handshake between Alex Frei (left) and Stefan Keeler on March 11, 2022: Then there is a back and forth between Aarau and Winti.
Alex Frei lost her first match as a full-time professional coach. In September 2020 with FC Wil in Aarau. The consolation prize after the failed premiere comes from the rival coach himself: a bottle of fine gin, given by Stefan Keeler, who also imports rare spirits.
It’s not like Keeler gives every visiting coach a liqueur to take home. But Frei has an eventful past: they have known each other since the C-Juniors, in 2002 Keller and Frei are the captains of the U21 national team, causing storms of enthusiasm as the “titans” at the European Championship. Keeler once spoke about his relationship with Frey: “We were two picture-book Swiss and also exchanged views on hiking vacations.”
Free in BVB, an under-the-radar keeler
After that, the tracks separate: Frei broke into BVB, with FCB in the Champions League, became the Swiss record scorer and is very popular. Keeler, on the other hand, flies under the radar as a player. They only meet again in the Uefa Pro license course, in 2020 they start their career in master training at the same time.
So, are there signs on the sidelines again today that go beyond the handshake? More than questionable! This has nothing to do with Frei’s new employer FC Basel, who wants to cement Aarau’s upside by advancing in the cup. But with some accidents last spring.
“Football God gave justice”
Frei is still a Winterthur coach and as such part of Hitchcock’s promotion race to the Challenge League. In the end, Wente, Schaffhausen and Aarau have the same number of points, but Zurich has the best goal difference. Celebrating the rise, Alex Fry said: “The god of football does justice.” A sentence that does not go well in Brügglifeld and Keller. Because in Arau’s view, the fair god of football would have chosen the FCA to be promoted.
Background: In mid-March, a beer mug hits the head of an assistant assistant and injures him in a head-to-head duel at Schützenwiese. Instead of giving up the game and Aarau winning, as stipulated in the regulations, the three points remain at Winterthur. At the time, Keeler caused an uproar when he entered the field after throwing the cup and remained there to lodge a protest with the referee. This behavior, in turn, causes – to put it mildly – head shaking on the Winti seat.
Looking back, Frei explains: “My statement was based on the fact that Winti had to wait 37 years for promotion. Nothing stuck with me, Aarau is a great club, Brogliefeld is a great stadium. But whoever tops the table at the end of the season deserves to be promoted. That’s why Aarau does not You must take yourself more seriously than you are now. Recognizing without envy that a competitor is finally a part of it.”
