Alcaraz secures the quarter-finals of the Spanish Davis Cup – sport.ORF.at

US Open winner Carlos Alcaraz helped Spain qualify for the Davis Cup quarter-finals with his first win as the world number one on Sunday. Alkaraz defeated South Korea’s Kwon Sun-woo 6-4 7-6 (7/1) to make it 2-0 after Roberto Bautista Agut beat Hong Seung-chan.

“It’s a different atmosphere, you breathe different air, completely different from other tournaments,” Alcaraz said, describing his impressions. Spain, which has won the Davis Cup six times, will meet Croatia in the quarter-finals.

Italy beat Sweden

In the first group in Bologna, Matteo Berrettini and his companions achieved a 2-1 victory over Sweden. The Italians now meet the USA in Malaga, where all other international matches from the quarter-finals to the final will take place on Sunday from Tuesday.

In Hamburg, after Tim Putz and Kevin Krawetz twice beat Wimbledon champion Matthew Ebden and Mac Purcell, Germany defeated Australia 2-1 and thus won the third set. Germany now meet Canada while Australia battles the Netherlands for a place in the semi-finals.

The winners and runners-up from the four pools in Bologna, Valencia, Hamburg and Glasgow qualified for the quarter-finals.
