Two-time world champions Australia lost in the opening round for the first time in Rugby World Cup history. Rivals Fiji suffered a surprising 23:24 (3:3) loss against Portugal in Toulouse on Sunday evening, but still managed to earn a last-gasp quarter-final berth to finish second in Group C. A World Cup worth one point if lost by a maximum margin of seven points.
In the last eight, Fiji, who are in the quarter-finals for the third time since 1987 and 2007, will face England, who are confident winners of Group D after a 22:17 win over Australia in their group match on 17 September. A direct comparison was thus concluded with the larger neighbor, who ultimately had the same number of points.
Wales secure victory in the group and face Argentina in the quarter-finals. The South Americans punched their ticket with a 39:27 victory over Japan on Sunday.
