Renee Wheeler upon being sacked in Japan
“I wanted a different ending”
Two back-to-back defeats were one too many: Renee Wheeler talks about his dismissal from Kashima Antlers.
Renee Wheeler is on the east coast of Japan, where he has finished all the formalities and packed his things. He will be back in Switzerland at the end of the week.
His dismissal of record-breaking Japanese champion Kashima Antlers two days ago also put him in the wrong position. “It’s amazing and frustrating to me that the end came as soon as I fought back. We have always been ranked in the top three and we are now fifth, only two points behind second.”
He does not even want to speculate on the reasons for his sudden departure. “Only two defeats was one too much to lead the Antlers.” The fact that the club’s leadership sold its chief defense and top scorer to Belgium made his work even more difficult. Lucerne’s former striker Blessing Ileke, brought in by Weiler, was not used. In the end he was a victim of the impatience of the Japanese. At the club where Brazilian international superstar Zico plays an advisory role.
touching encounters
For Weiler, one of the country’s most charismatic and unorthodox soccer coaches, it’s clear that cultural differences, while attractive, are also unpredictable. “The league is interesting and the confrontations with people outside of football have been very moving. That is why I wished for a different ending.”
Now he will likely be home by the end of the week. “I will first think about what I have experienced and draw lessons from it. Multinational work is challenging.” Weiler has already worked in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Egypt and Japan during his coaching career. Needless to say, a new adventure awaits one day.
But the priority now is to get back to his family. He is looking forward to the last days of summer in Lake Zurich. And last but not least, local food.
