Embraer or Airbus? Maybe both. At least the head of Lufthansa, Carsten Spohr, does not rule out this when renewing the regional fleet.
Lufthansa is currently mainly interested in the question: Where will the large aircraft that will be in demand by the summer of 2023 come from? In addition to this, group management also deals with the long-term planning of the fleet. Because regional airlines will also have to be replaced in the coming years.
Lufthansa Cityline’s Bombardier CRJ, Dolomiti’s Embraer E-Jets and Dolomiti Airlines have not reached the end of their service terms. But they didn’t get any younger. Therefore, the Lufthansa group should also ask themselves how they want to go into the future: with Airbus A220 or Embraer E2?
Offers not yet officially requested
Or with both? At least Karsten Spohr doesn’t rule it out. And this is not only because the Embraer E2 and A220 can cover parts of other sizes. “It is always the case that the higher the number, the greater the potential discount,” the Lufthansa chief said in a media interview during the annual Iata meeting in Doha.
“On the other hand, you don’t want to rely more than a certain limit on just one provider.” It’s no shame to have options. It will be some time before discounts are considered. “We haven’t even formally asked for offers,” Spohr said.
