Long-distance runner Dominic Lobalo produced a world-class performance in the 5km road race in Barcelona.
In 13:12 minutes, the LC Brühl athlete crossed the finish line as the winner and equaled the European record of Frenchman Jamie Gresier.
Lubalo, born in South Sudan, has been competing under the Swiss flag since September 7, 2023, according to the decision of the World Athletics Federation. However, he is not yet eligible to compete for Switzerland in the World and European Championships. A reconsideration request from the Swiss Athletics Federation to the IAAF remains pending.
Therefore his time was not recognized as a Swiss record. That leaves Geneva's Julian Wanders, who crossed the finish line in 13:29 in Monaco in 2019.
Women's world record
Kenyan Beatrice Chebet set a new women's world record. The 23-year-old ran the 5km in a time of 14:13 minutes. The third place in the 2023 World Cup therefore undermines the previous record marks for both purely women's and mixed races.
