Ice Hockey World Cup in Utica – Finland is too strong for Switzerland – Sports

  • The Swiss ice hockey team also lost its third match at the World Cup in the USA.
  • In the 2:5 win over Finland, the Swiss at least scored their first goal of the tournament.
  • Just 42 seconds later, Petra Nieminen put the Finns ahead.

This is certainly not how the Swiss women imagined it at the start of their third World Cup match. Just 42 seconds later, Petra Nieminen took advantage of an insufficient clearance attempt by Laura Zimmermann and sent the ball into an empty net. A 1-0 win for the Finns, who trail Switzerland in the world rankings but are still favorites in the game.

Despite the early setback, the Swiss remained resilient and fought their way back into the match. And with success: Lara Stalder scored the first goal for the national team in this year's World Cup after 15 minutes. EV Zug striker parried the shot until it slipped under the Finnish goalkeeper's glove.

Error in the middle third

But the Swiss joy only lasted for a short time. After a penalty kick against Annik Pucci, Runja Savolainen put Finland ahead again before the end of the first third.

The northerners showed their qualities in the middle third. Sanne Vanhanen and Susanna Thabani scored two more goals (25/34) to take a 4-1 lead before the final period of the match.

Stalder missed the call

But the Swiss did not give up. Stalder missed two good chances to bring Switzerland closer again. Senja Lehmann did better about 10 minutes from time and scored against Sani Ahola to make it 2:4 – but the Swiss couldn't get any closer. Instead, the outstanding Jenny Herikowski made it all clear with a score of 5:2.

German women's ice hockey took an early win in the weaker second group and easily reached the quarter-finals. They beat Sweden 1-0 and celebrated their third victory in their third match. As the winner of Group B, Germany will face third place from Group A in the quarter-finals.

In the preliminary round match, which witnessed intense competition between the two major teams, the United States of America and Canada, the host team won 1-0 in overtime. This is the supposed final, however, this has happened 21 times in 22 World Cups so far.

This means that Switzerland is the only team left without a point in the World Cup. Thanks to the situation, the national team is still certain of qualifying for the quarter-finals. In all likelihood, the opponent in the eighth round will be Finland again.

And this is how it continues

Switzerland awaits the last match in the group stage of the World Cup on Tuesday. You can watch the duel with the Czech Republic live on the second SRF channel from 9 pm.
