Wildfires are raging in Western Australia. At least ten homes were completely destroyed in the suburbs of Perth. The region is experiencing a very uneven heat wave.

At least ten homes have been completely destroyed by a raging bushfire in the northern suburbs of Perth, Australia. Western Australia Deputy Premier Rita Saffiotti said the fire destroyed four sheds and several vehicles, including caravans.

Hundreds of people are without electricity due to several power poles being damaged. This was reported by the broadcaster “9News”, citing emergency services. By noon (local time) the fire had already consumed 1,500 hectares of land.

People have to leave their homes

According to official reports, around 130 people, including children who fled their homes, spent the night in emergency shelters.

People should leave their homes whenever they can – or seek safety in shelters. More than 500 firefighters, with air support, battled the blaze, which was quickly spread by hot winds.

A firefighting aircraft from the state of New South Wales was dispatched to the west coast to provide support. Television images showed a fire truck driving past burning trees and through swirling sparks on a smoky road.

A very unusual heat wave

Large parts of the state of Western Australia are currently experiencing a very unusual heat wave, with record temperatures particularly around Perth. Another 65 fires were counted.

Perth is set to record temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius today. “Today’s weather forecast is merciless,” Saffiotti said. According to the Meteorological Department, the temperature is 12 to 14 degrees above normal. Summer hasn’t started yet in the Southern Hemisphere.
