  • The Swiss quartet of Carole Howald, Selina Witschunki, Silvana Tirinzoni and Alina Patz won the European Championship title for the first time.
  • CC Aarau beat Italy 6:5 in the final of the European Championship in Aberdeen thanks to a perfect last stone.
  • This is the first European Championship title for Swiss women since 2014.

In the end, the European Championship final between Switzerland and Italy turned into a real crime: Skip Silvana Tirinzoni’s team led 5:3 until the eighth end, but Italy made it interesting again and tied 5:5. And in the end it got really exciting.

Centimeter resolution in final finish

The Swiss, who had the right to the last stone, faced a major challenge from their opponents. CC Aarau was not on the best stage, and even the outstanding Alina Pätz in fourth place failed on the penultimate attempt. Italy was hit by two stones and made life difficult for Switzerland with guards in front of the house.

But Patz did not let the missing stone bother her: with a brilliant final stone, which she placed in the middle with the so-called “hit and roll” and at the same time decisively pushed an Italian stone away, she decided the final by a few centimeters in favor of the Swiss women.

The circle ends with a perfect European championship

After the 11th match win, the circle was complete for Tirinzoni, Patz and Carol Howald in Aberdeen, Scotland: after 4 (Terinzoni, Patz) and 3 (Howald) World Cup titles in a row, a European Championship gold. The tournament followed. Selina Wychonki, who joined the team in May of this year with some background noise, celebrated her first major title.
