- Three Swiss clubs learned of their first European Cup competition on Wednesday.
- Servette will meet Belgian runners-up Genk in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.
- Falling two levels into the second qualifying round of the Conference League, Lucerne will compete with Djurgarden of Sweden.
- Basel will play either Tobol Kostanay from Kazakhstan or Honka Espoo from Finland.
Servette faces KRC Genk in the second qualifying round of the Champions League. The Swiss runner-up meets his Belgian counterpart. It will be a difficult task for the Swiss West, Genk missed out on the title by just one point.
The two teams had never played each other before, but the Belgians had met opponents from Switzerland several times, and with great success. In the 2013/14 season, the club celebrated two victories over Thun (1-0, 2-1) in the group stage of the Europa League. In the previous season, they first beat FC Lucerne twice in the qualifying round (2-0, 2-1) and then drew twice against Basel in the group stage (0-0, 2-2).
The group stage never reached
The home and away matches are scheduled for 25/26. July and 1/2. Scheduled for August, Servette has home rights first. If Geneva wins the duel, they will meet Glasgow Rangers in the third qualifying round. If they lose, they can still try their hand at the Europa League playoffs or the Conference League playoffs. The Geneva team must win one of these duels in order to reach the group stage at least once.
After 2020 and 2021, the club qualified for the European Cup for the third time in 4 years. However, the 1979 European Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-finalist never reached the group stage.
Basel thrives on a long journey
In the Conference League Basel were drawn against an easier opponent from Lucerne. In the second qualifying round, Bayern first meet the winner between Tobol Kostanai of Kazakhstan and Honka Espoo of Finland at home. In Europe’s third-highest league, the people of Basel caused quite a stir last season.
FCL will first have to deal with Djurgardens IF away from home and therefore a fairly well-known club. The Swedes were runners-up last season. The games will be held on July 27 and August 3.
In addition, YB has already qualified at least for the group stage of the Europa League from Swiss clubs. The champion will enter the European Cup with a play-off for the Champions League. Even Lugano, a loser in the cup final who will go into the Europa League play-off, is certain to be in the group stage.
