Last year’s finalists Australia bounced back from an opening defeat against Great Britain in the final group stage of the Davis Cup to claim their first win in their second clash. Captain Leighton Hewitt’s side won 2-1 against France in Manchester.

However, it was the French who got the better start in the fight. Adrian Mannarino (ATP 34), who had already beaten Dominic Stryker in the match against Switzerland, beat Max Purcell (ATP 43) 7:6 (7:4) and 6:4.

Mahat/Roger-Vasselin struck

Alex De Minor then revived the Australian team. World No. 12. Beat Ugo Humbert (ATP 36) 7:6 (7:2) and 6:3. Matthew Epton and Purcell made it to the final doubles: they beat Nicolas Mahut/Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7:5 and 6:3.

Switzerland against Great Britain under pressure

The result was not particularly beneficial for Switzerland, who are bottom of Group B without a win and only won one set against France. Stan Wawrinka and Co need to beat Great Britain on Friday to have any legitimate hope of securing one of the top two spots in this group.
