Mujinga Kambungi has finally started the outdoor season at Stade Atletissima in Lausanne – due to foot problems under special circumstances.
On Friday, the outdoor season also begins in Mujinga Kambundji. Ironically, it was at the home meeting of the Diamond League in Lausanne that the Bernese native could finally show herself on the competition podium once more. This is of course not an issue for the fastest runner in Switzerland.
Plantar fasciitis in the foot had been plaguing the 31-year-old for months, preventing her from optimal training and competitions for a long time. Just this week she announced she’s starting over the 100m, but will skip the relay and 200m this summer.
Almost no more running training
Although she is looking forward to her performance in the 100 meters in Athens, the veteran track and field athlete is also feeling unusually nervous. “I’m nervous because I don’t know what the race will be like and what to expect,” says Kambundji.
In training, she greatly reduced the load on her feet, and in the end only completed two units on the track per week. The soreness in the foot is mainly due to strain, but the whole end of the season was not up for discussion realistically. “We always wanted to find a solution.”
For her as a runner, the few running courses are “not easy”, and there is a big question mark over her form. In Lausanne it feels good if you can finish a clean race technically. “And when you see that I can build on this performance. Then I leave the train with a smile,” Kambunji says.
Emmer and Joseph wave win daily
Many other Swiss athletes also take part in the match, which takes place at the Pontes Stadium. Long jumper Simon Emmer and hurdler Jason Joseph can look forward to winning this day.
The 800-meter duel between Audrey Wirou and Laure Hoffmann will attract particular interest in western Switzerland. Hurdler Ditaji Kambundji currently has a season’s best time of 12.78 seconds. On the Athletissima stage, the third-place finisher presents an opportunity to target her personal best time (12.70). Ricky Petrucciani, runner-up at the 400m European Championships, pole vaulter Angelica Moser and women’s relay also participate.
