Australia cancels quad-state meetings
According to Australian media reports, the meeting of the United States, Australia, India and Japan, scheduled for next Wednesday, will not take place.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese canceled a Quad meeting in Sydney after US President Joe Biden announced he would not travel to Australia after the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan.
The “Sydney Morning Herald” newspaper on Wednesday quoted the government leader as saying that the Union of States meeting between the United States, Australia, India and Japan scheduled for next Wednesday will not take place.
A US default is already looming on June 1
Instead, Biden now wants to attend meetings with congressional leaders in the US and ensure timely action is taken to address the crisis. The background is that if Biden’s government does not agree with Republicans in the US Congress on raising the debt ceiling, the US government will be threatened with default in a few days. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned that this could happen as early as June 1.
“Understandably, he had to make this decision,” Australian broadcaster ABC quoted Albanese as saying on Wednesday. The Quad will try to meet on the sidelines of the G7 meeting in Hiroshima. Biden-Albanese bilateral talks are also scheduled.
At the same time, it is still possible that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida will visit Australia next week – even without a Quad meeting, Albanese stressed. US President Barack Obama visited Australia in 2011.
