Timo Baumgartel (25) of 1. FC Union Berlin may have sustained a serious head or neck injury in the Bundesliga match against Armenia Bielefeld.
The 25-year-old defender collided with Bielefeld striker Fabian Kloss (33) in the 30th minute on Saturday and had to be treated on the field for several minutes.
Then he was carried from the square on a stretcher with his neck rest placed around his neck. According to union manager Oliver Rohnert, 49, Baumgartel is said to have been unconscious for a brief period. But then it became easy to get to it again.
Initially there was no information on the severity of the injury.
Kloss was able to continue playing despite the collision and the shorter treatment.
Timo Baumgartel suffered a severe concussion. Urs Fischer (55), in the press conference following the 1-0 win, described the diagnosis, which was ultimately mild given the oppressive images, as “positive news”. Baumgartel was brought to the Berlin Charité for examinations.
Baumgartel will miss the Conference League return leg on Thursday against Maccabi Haifa and the next Bundesliga match on Sunday at FSV Mainz 05.
Bielefelds-Close was able to continue playing despite the collision and a shorter treatment break. Paul Jekyll (23) joined Baumgartel, but he will also miss Thursday against Haifa due to a yellow and red card. Fischer did not comment on possible alternatives in defense.
