  • Co-hosts Latvia stormed into the bronze at the Ice Hockey World Championships!
  • In the match for third place in Tampere, Finland, the Baltic States defeated the United States 4:3 after extra time. Christian Robbins scored the decisive goal in the 62nd minute.
  • Canada beat Germany 5-2 in the final.

It was hard work for the Latvian national team to go into overtime in the match for third place at the Ice Hockey World Championship against the USA. Because North America was leading 3-2 since the 47th minute and a goal from Matthew Coronato. But the Baltic states showed their capabilities in returning to the stadium in Tampere, Finland.

Above all, Christian Robbins made sure that the many Latvian fans who traveled to Finland finally had something to celebrate:

  • 55 minutes: Robbins pulls from within the correct position. USA’s Casey Desmith has poor vision and gets caught in the far corner – 3-3.
  • 62 minutes: The United States increases the number of strokes, but cannot take the lead again at normal time. And after 82 seconds of overtime, Robins was among all the people who scored the decisive goal 4: 3.

This is the name of the new Latvian national hero Robins, a 25-year-old defender from the AHL of the second division. For Latvia, it’s their first ever World Cup medal – and of all things a tournament featuring the Baltics as co-hosts.

Before that, the Latvians were threatened with déjà vu: as in the semi-final against Canada, the Balts failed to make progress twice and threatened to leave empty-handed. Instead, the country of just 1.8 million people ended up taking the bronze medal at the World Cup. Meanwhile, the United States will have to settle for fourth place, as it did a year ago.
