- The newly formed duo Roman Rösli / Andrin Gulic won EM gold in two coxless.
- In the women’s sculls, 19-year-old Aurelia-Maxima Janzen took silver.
- Andrene Strozina takes bronze again in the lightweight singles.
The Swiss national anthem was also played on the final day of the European Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia: after Rafael Ahumada/Jan Schäuble had won the European title in the lightweight double sprint the previous day, the pairing Roman Rösli/Andrin Gulić doubled it.
The Swiss were victorious in their first major event together taking gold in the coxless two. After a poor start to the race, the duo turned up the heat and prevailed in a very exciting final stage. Röösli and Gulich, who had only been working as a team since this season, overtook the British boat in the final meters and won in a photo finish by two-tenths of a second.
For the 29-year-old Rösli from Lucerne, this is the first victory in a major event after his place on the podium. It is a first-ever medal for the 24-year-old’s teammate from Zurich. Prior to these two Bled titles, there has been no victory for Switzerland in the EM since 2018.
Only 19 years old silver
In the women’s singles, Aurelia-Maxima Janzen caused a very positive surprise. The 19-year-old looked confident and strong in her first title fight among active athletes and won the silver medal. Only Dutch hegemon Caroline Floren could not match Janzen. After the resignation of Janine Gmelin, Switzerland remains at the helm of the skiff position.
Struzina again with bronze
There was also a medal for Switzerland in the lightweight singles: Andrei Strozina won the bronze, like last year. The 26-year-old from Zug showed a strong race and finished third behind favorites Hugo Pury of France and Nils Toure of Italy.
Roll is the sixth
In the women’s lightweight singles event, Elaine Ruhl moved up to sixth and last, eventually being unable to keep up with the best. However, it is the best result for the 23-year-old from Geneva at the European Championships. Romanian Ionela Livia Kuzmuk secures the victory.
Switzerland also came sixth in the coxless quad. Patrick Brunner, Kai Schatzel, Joel Schurch and Dominic Kondrao all missed the chance to win when the Brits won the European Championships. With four medals, the Swiss European Rowing Championships can be classified as very successful.
