The Swiss national team begins the World Cup at home in Schaffhausen with a 3:5 defeat to the United States of America.
This was not how the CC Geneva players imagined the start of the World Cup on home soil in Schaffhausen: in the first match, Yannick Schwaler, Benoit Schwarz van Berkel, Sven Michel and Pablo Lachat had to concede defeat to the USA 3:5.
The tension in front of the home fans in the almost sold-out IWC Arena was particularly noticeable in Schwarz-van Berkel, who always plays the last stones for the Swiss. He only managed 71 percent of the successful blocks throughout the match.
The Americans, led by Skip John Shuster, managed to steal a total of three blocks by the sixth end and took a 3-0 lead. Only then did the Swiss reaction finally come in the form of a house for two.
With the end of the ninth game with the score 4:2 in front of the United States, Skip Schwaller's team was once again unable to take advantage of the final stone and scored only one point. The 2018 U.S. Olympic champions didn't let that crucial advantage be taken away from them — also because Schwarz van Berkel's final stone was so short.
And this is how it continues
On Easter Sunday, Switzerland will face Norway in the morning (from 9:00 am live on SRF 2) and Sweden in the afternoon (from 2:00 pm live on SRF 2).
