In the final minutes, the Americans in Wellington tried everything once again to keep their impressive series from collapsing. Across all tournaments, they have won a total of 13 World Cup matches in a row since 2015 (and won two titles in the process). But the winning goal that made it 2-1 did not want to come.
The summit match in the fifth group ended with the correct result. After all, the Netherlands dominated the first half, and after the break the United States left its mark on the match.
The first shot on goal is well placed
The United States started the game fast, but were hit by an icy cold shower after 17 minutes. Gilles Roord fired into the left corner with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area to make it 1-0. It was the Americans' first ever goal attempt in a World Cup finals.
It was clear that the defending champions were shocked and could not achieve anything as a result. The 'Orange' dominated the match with confident passing and calm handling of the ball – repeatedly causing pinpricks. But it remained 1-0 until the end of the first half.
Horan hit hard to equalize the score
Coach Vlatko Andonovski seems to have found the right words in the locker room. Because the United States has emerged from the catacombs, transformed and more determined. The Netherlands could not break free from their grip – and 1-1 in the 62nd minute was the logical result. After a well-rehearsed corner kick, Lindsay Horan stepped up to the ball and headed it powerfully into the net.
Now it is the Europeans who need some time to collect themselves. Time after time, American attacks continued toward their goal, but no other goals were scored. After nine straight defeats against the United States, the Dutch were finally able to enjoy a draw against the North American national team again.

The last two matches in Group E will start on August 1 at 9:00 AM Swiss time: Vietnam – Netherlands and Portugal – USA. For world No. 1 (USA) and world No. 9 (Netherlands), a draw is enough to qualify.
