According to a Japanese media report, Toyota wants to start producing electric cars in the US by the summer of 2025. At Toyota’s existing plant in Kentucky, USA, more than 10,000 medium to large electric SUVs roll off the assembly line every month.
At least that’s what Japanese business newspaper Nikkei reports. Concrete samples or platforms have not yet been named. According to Nikkei, the US production of 120,000 battery electric cars per year is part of a plan to increase global production to one million electric vehicles by 2026.
A Toyota spokesman said the “reported details” were not what the company had announced — but he didn’t vehemently deny the Nikkei report either. The spokesperson added that no decision has been made yet on when Toyota will start producing electric cars in the US.
Strategically visionary decisions cannot be expected from Toyota at the present time. The Japanese carmaker is rumored to soon offer a new three-year plan to its suppliers as part of its electrification strategy. On April 1, 2023, Koji Sato will take over as CEO of Toyota from Akio Toyota.
