Washington, July 30: US and Japan plan to work together on new economic talks on semiconductors. Japanese Trade Minister Koichi Hagiuda said the two longtime partners had agreed to set up a joint research center for next-generation semiconductors during the so-called “two-plus-two” trade ministers’ meeting in Washington on Friday. “As the world’s first and third largest economies, it is important that we work together to protect an orderly economy,” US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said at the opening session. The collaboration will “improve supply chain resilience in strategic sectors, particularly semiconductors, batteries and critical minerals,” the two said in a joint statement.
No further details have been released. Japanese newspaper Nikkei previously reported that the center is to be established in Japan by the end of the year to research two-nanometer semiconductor chips. It will include a prototype product line and is expected to start manufacturing semiconductors by 2025, the newspaper said.
