After storming the Capitol
Donald Trump is now officially summoned
A “historic and important” step: the investigation committee formally summoned former President Donald Trump. The reason for this was the storming of the Capitol.

Former US President Donald Trump has not commented on a subpoena from the investigative committee.
As it was announced, the commission investigating the attack on the US Capitol has summoned former President Donald Trump (76). He is due to deliver the required documents by November 4 and will be available for questioning for several days under oath from November 14, according to the letter published on Friday. It remains unclear whether Trump will follow the subpoena or take action against it. The House committee decided last week to subpoena Trump.
The subpoena can still be a symbolic move. There is a process for bringing defaulting witnesses to court for contempt of Congress. But the committee’s time is running out.
The new House of Representatives will be elected in November. The committee must have completed its work by the end of the year — before the newly elected House of Representatives begins its work in January. And according to polls, chances are good that the Republican Party, which is largely pro-Trump, will achieve a majority in the election. After that, further investigations into the attack should be off the table.
Trump can send lawyers
If Trump does not obey the subpoena, the House of Representatives can report it to the Department of Justice for contempt of Congress. For example, former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, 68, has already been convicted and will be imprisoned for four months.
Trump can also initially send his attorney to court against the subpoena. And even if Trump follows through on the request, he can refuse to testify, for example so as not to incriminate himself. Several of those close to him exercised this right when questioned by the commission.
Five dead in storming the Capitol
Trump supporters storm the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 – right after the Republican’s appearance. The then-president stirred up the crowd again with false claims that his victory over rival Joe Biden (79) had been stolen by fraud. He called on his supporters to protest in front of the Capitol, as Biden’s election victory was about to be officially shut down. Five people were killed as a result of the attack.
In his first reaction last week, Trump did not comment on whether he wanted to comply with the subpoena, but only criticized the time the subpoena was too late. At the same time, he repeated his allegations, which were refuted by many courts, about “mass fraud” in the presidential election.
In its memo, the committee stressed that it was aware that recalling a former president was an “important and historic” step. At the same time, they noted, Theodore Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Gerald Ford, among others, had testified before Congress as past presidents. They clearly brought forth the Roosevelt quote, which states that the former president is just as much an American citizen as anyone else, and it is his duty to obey a subpoena from Congress. (SDA)
