The new Prime Minister of Italy: Giorgia Meloni.
Giorgia Meloni (45 years old) is the first woman in Italian history to be sworn in as head of government. The leader of the far-right Fratelli d’Italia party was sworn in on Saturday morning in front of the head of state, Sergio Mattarella (81). The men and women of her government took the oath at the Quirinal Palace in Rome. In the future, Italy will be governed by a right-wing government consisting of Fratelli, the conservative Forza Italia led by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi (86) and the right-wing populist League led by Matteo Salvini (49).
The legal alliance around Meloni was the clear favorite to form a new government in Italy. Fratelli won the parliamentary elections at the end of September with 26 percent, with Forza Italia, Lega and the breakaway party Nue Modrati, they have an absolute majority in both houses of parliament. So Meloni must survive the votes of confidence. Representatives of the center-left and autonomy camp parties consulted with Mattarella on Thursday. Then some of them told reporters that they had expressed to the head of state their concerns about a right-wing government.
“we are ready”
Meloni was on Friday with party and faction leaders in Forza Italia and Lega at the presidential palace for consultations with President Mattarella. The conversation lasted ten minutes less than expected. “We are already declaring that we are ready, because we want to move forward as quickly as possible,” said Meloni, flanked by silent Forza Italia founder Silvio Berlusconi and Lega president Matteo Salvini. The joint public appearance of the right-wing alliance was preceded by an uproar over Berlusconi’s pro-Putin statements and a struggle to fill the ministries.
After an hour’s conversation with Mattarella, Meloni, born in Rome, read the list from her government. European politician Antonio Tajani, 69, of Berlusconi’s conservative Forza Italia party, is set to become foreign minister and deputy prime minister. Giancarlo Giorgetti (55) of the Right Populist League will head the important Ministry of Finance. His party leader Matteo Salvini, 49, has been given the Ministry of Infrastructure and, like Tajani, must become deputy prime minister.
The government was formed quickly
For the beleaguered Department of Justice, Meloni nominated politician Fratelli and former attorney general Carlo Nordeo (75). Maria Elisabetta Casellati (76), writer for Silvio Berlusconi (86), who was also in the running for office, was awarded the Ministry of Reforms. The Ministry of the Interior went to the governor of the city of Rome, Matteo Bentidosi.
Mattarella said after the meeting that the formation of the new government this time was quick, less than a month after the elections. “It was possible due to the clear election result and it was also necessary in light of the domestic and international situation,” the 81-year-old said. (SDA)
