This means athletes who finish fourth at the Olympics will have to wait for their first podium finish at a major competition.

In Brisbane, Fridolina Rolfö scored from a foul penalty and captain Kosovare Aslani scored after the break for the Swedes, who dominated play for long periods. Sweden, who finished third in France four years ago and were in the Olympic final in Tokyo two years ago, can at least console themselves with bronze after missing out on the World Cup final.
