In Bern, the number was 40,000 at the beginning of August. Smart meters installed. This is a device that replaces traditional electricity meters and enables households and businesses in Bern to assess their electricity consumption within a quarter of an hour.
Energie Wasser Bern (EWB), the energy supplier for the city of Bern, announced Thursday that it has already met 50% of the legal requirements. According to the EWB, this means that all Swiss grid operators must replace at least 80 percent of their traditional electricity meters with smart meters by 2027.
The installation of smart meters is part of the federal government’s energy strategy for 2050. The federal government hopes that these devices will enable all electricity consumers to better utilize the electricity saving potential of their homes on an accurate number basis.
According to the EWB, smart meters automatically send measurement data to the company in encrypted form. After installation, no one has to read the consumption on the site. ewb makes measurement data available to customers on its customer portal. By the end of 2025, the EWB wants to replace all electricity meters.
BKW and ESB are much less
BKW and Bern’s second-largest energy supplier, Energie Service Biel (ESB), are less advanced in replacing traditional electricity meters with new ones. In June this year, BKW announced that it had completed the tender process for the new metering system.
Mass installation of smart meters will begin next year. By the end of 2028, BKW will replace more than 400,000 meters.
said ESB’s Martin Camper on Thursday when asked to turn the first meters at Peel in the fall. Under ESB planning, as required by the federal government, 80 percent of smart meters will be installed in 2027, according to ESB’s chief marketing and sales officer.
